The Wireless Headset

October 08 2010

wireless headset 200pxIf you are like me and live in a state where it is allowed to turn your car radio up full blast, and have a shouting match in your car, but not talk on your cell phone, you probably need a hands free headset for your phone.

Most of the time, any product you choose is likely to disappoint you. Be sure to read product reviews before purchasing one. I just made the mistake of listening to the mobile expert in the store and buying the Plantronics Savor – boy was I disappointed, but it looked and sounded awesome in the store!

I should admit that I am a gadget guy – have the iPhone 4, the iPad 3G, the MacBook Pro, the Flip Camera, even a Livescribe Smart Pen. I love the promise of technical advancement and consider myself a power user of all of these devices. Just ask my wife who tells me constantly to “put it down.”

Imagine a hands free product that uses three microphones instead of two to offer superior noise cancellation. Surely three microphones are better than one. Even better, what if your wireless headset would read text messages to you as they come in on your phone! Awesome, eh? Well – as it turns out, those are the features that lured me in. These features represent progress and solution based technology to the consumer. I thought that Plantronics had hit a home run with the Savor M1100.

The features are too good to be true. In my test, the quality of the Plantronics Savor M1100 did not live up to expectations on Noise Supression. Furthermore, the Vocalyst feature that reads and sends text messages was a rip off. They charge an extra $60 per year ($5.99 per month) for that service. Besides, if you have a smartphone, you can get the same functionality from Google Voice for free.

Anyway – I returned the Plantronics Savor and cancelled the service. I will stick with the BlueAnt Q2. Like the Savor, it struggles with noise cancellation – guess we will all just need to live with that for now. But the audio sound is very clear. The voice recognition works great, especially the feature that allows you to say “what can I say” rather than “say a command.” I always forget the commands. The Q2 also announces incoming caller names for up to 2000 address book entries, which is neat. It also includes Microsoft Bing 411, which offers access to news, weather, sports and other stuff.

Anyway, turn down the radio. Prohibit any talking in your car. Use a wireless headset if you need to talk to someone while driving. Stay safe! Sell more real estate by staying connected to your customers and answering your phone!
