3 Ways Real Estate Brokers Can Find Work and Life Balance

Many people think that real estate is a flexible career that enables agents and brokers to make their own schedules and work at times that best suit them. As lovely as that sounds, people often forget that real estate professionals are essentially on call throughout the day, and how successful brokers often have to sacrifice valuable personal time in order to close those high dollar deals.

For most people, time management is a valuable skill to have. For the real estate broker, however, it’s an essential quality that separates good brokers from average ones. Generally speaking, there’ll always be a juggling component to the real estate industry, but there are steps that brokers can take to improve their work-life balance. Here’s how you can have free time in your life:

1. Determine what tasks are the most important

Before you’re able to increase your leisure time, you’re going to have to exercise some basic project management skills first to help you work more efficiently. One of the most important skills is being able to prioritize your duties. To do this, you need to write down everything that you have to do in the week and rank it from more important to least important.

Alternatively, you can set a to-do list for each individual day and add a couple important tasks on the list along with some minor things to do. However you go about drawing your list, it’s essential to itemize it in a way that enables you to complete your most difficult and time-consuming tasks first.

2. Spend an hour disconnected

There’s no denying that the internet is a valuable workplace tool, but it can also be one of our biggest distractions. Many people spend a lot more time on social media platforms than they should, and excessive procrastination time really takes a toll on one’s productivity levels. Balance this out by working completely unplugged for an hour a day; that means no internet, no phone, nothing but pen and paper. Take this time to do some of the hands-on tasks like completing paperwork, reading through contracts, or organizing files.

3. Plan out the day

The nature of being a real estate broker makes it virtually impossible to map out the day into organized timetables, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t create a general idea of what needs to be done during the course of the day. Set aside a set amount of time for various tasks; give yourself time each day to focus on business planning, recruiting, training agents, etc. The purpose is to get into a routine so that you get used to working on a schedule, which can really boost productivity.

There is no secret to striking a healthy balance between work and personal time. All one needs to do is plan ahead and have the discipline to resist distractions while working in the office. Developing an overall routine that helps complete tasks more efficiently and sticking to it can do wonders for freeing up more personal time throughout the week.
