10 Ways to Give Back to Your Community

hdc 10 ways to give back to your community

There are many reasons to give back to your community: to meet new people, improve or learn skills, make an impact, or just because it feels good. In the real estate business, giving back can also lead to new business opportunities, can strengthen your lead network, and can show others you're committed to your community and not just in it for the paycheck. Here are ten ways you can get involved and make a difference in your community.

Sponsor a team.

Youth sports teams can always use help with uniforms, travel expenses, equipment, and refreshments. Pick your favorite sport and find a local team that could use a little extra help.

Hold a fundraiser or drive.

Keep your community warm and fed by hosting a canned food, coat, glove, or shoe drive, then partner with a shelter, church, or other philanthropic organization to get your goods to those who need them.

Adopt a family.

Brighten the holidays for a family in need by picking up an extra ham or turkey, buying and wrapping some presents for the kids, and dropping it all off before the holidays. A web search should help you find a reputable organization in your city that has a list of families in need and will be able to tell you what they need.

Plan a community event.

Bring members of your community together for some fun! This could be a block party, festival, giant yard sale, or even Christmas caroling.

Visit a senior center.

For most of us, the holidays are a time to connect with friends and loved ones, but not everyone is so lucky. Make time to visit a nursing home, hospital, or senior center to spread some cheer.

Join in the fun.

It's not too late to decorate a float and throw some candy and beads in an upcoming holiday parade!

Organize a community cleanup.

Enlist the help of local clubs, troops, and organizations to clean up a local park, or ask your city how to adopt a street.

Grant a wish.

The Make-A-Wish® Foundation works with volunteers, donors, and sponsors to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Find out how you can help here.

Perform a random act of kindness.

Giving back doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming. Pay for someone's coffee, drop off a pack of socks at the homeless shelter, or leave a $20 gas card on someone's windshield. Whatever you come up with will be sure to bring a smile to someone's face.

Serve up a smile.

Meals on Wheels and similar programs help senior citizens maintain their independence, reduce isolation, and ensure our seniors don't go hungry. Find a program near you to donate or volunteer.
