6 Ways You Can Help Veterans Find a Home

Many of our nation's heroes, veterans who have fought for our country, lack the means to rent, much less buy their first home. Nationwide, more than 60,000 military veterans sleep on our streets every night. Below is a list of organizations that work to provide safe housing options for veterans. Find out how you can get involved and give back to veterans by helping them find a home.

1.) HONORS: HONORS (Housing Our Nation's Outstanding Returning Soldiers) constructs or remodels homes to accommodate the special needs of disabled and injured veterans after recently returning home from combat.

How can you help? You can also donate funds, building supplies, materials, skilled or non-skilled labor here, or volunteer to join a building project.

2.) Final Salute HOME: Final Salute's HOME program caters specifically to homeless female veterans and provides safe, transitional housing for them and their children. They also focus on integrating them back into their local communities and providing housing options in safe, residential areas.

How can you help? You can volunteer by organizing a fundraiser in support of Final Salute or by participating in informational sessions with the female veterans. You can also donate here.

3.) The Home Depot Foundation: The Home Depot Foundation helps wounded or disabled veterans by completing necessary renovations to their home, such as making them handicap accessible. They also work on transitional housing for homeless veterans around the country.

How can you help? You can volunteer to help participate in one of the projects or you can apply for a grant for your community here.

4.) Homes for Heroes: Homes for Heroes works with real estate agents all over the U.S. to provide discounted housing options to veterans and other service men and women.

How can you help? You can donate money to help veterans afford the costs that come with home ownership and you can also donate a house to be put up for auction. Learn more here.

5.) Got Your Six: Got Your Six works in many aspects of veteran care, but they paired with the 100,000 Homes Campaign to provide housing solutions and aid for homeless veterans across the country.

How can you help? You can craft care packages that will be distributed to homeless veterans or gift a donation. Learn more here.

6.) Veterans' Affairs Housing Assistance for Veterans: The VA allocates "Housing Choice" vouchers to veterans and their families that allows them to live in market rate rental housing all over the country. They also work with each veteran to help him or her achieve their recovery goals.
